Downside School’s best A-level results for a generation

Downside School’s first lay Head Master, Dr Whitehead, ends his first full year at the helm by re-energising the academic performance that characterised his tenure as Director of Studies over eight years ago.

44% A*/A and 76% A*/B grades are testament to the hard work of this year’s cohort and the undoubted additional value given to their results by Dr Whitehead’s academic team.

“Academic success cannot be taken for granted; the pupils and staff here at Downside have demonstrated how inspiring teaching and hard work can achieve the right results, especially when supported by a particularly stimulating and enriching school cultural and spiritual life. Apart from being very strong results in themselves, these grades show exceptional value-added performance“.

• One outstanding pupil was awarded 6A*s and will go on to read Medicine at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge; another pupil with an all A* performance will read History at Magdalen College, Oxford.

• All those with Oxbridge offers gained their places, with a clean sweep of A* and A grades.

• One pupil accepted an offer to read Veterinary Science at the prestigious Royal Veterinary College, London and two pupils have been awarded places to read Medicine.

• There were excellent subject results across a range of academic areas, with particularly strong results in Physics and Chemistry bucking the national trend. Results in the core subjects of Mathematics and English Literature were very good as well as Religious Studies.
