Outstanding and colourful
Founded in 1889, and set in idyllic, rural surroundings, Abbotsholme is an independent co-educational boarding and day school for ages 2–18, with additional nursery provision. It is a school like no other: where each child’s contribution is entirely respected and encouraged throughout. Pupils are high achievers and leave Abbotsholme confident, resilient, independent and adaptable. There is an apt motto to describe Abbotsholme: ‘An Abbotsholme education is an education for life’.
The ISI inspectors recently commented that Abbotsholme is ‘outstanding, emotionally healthy and spiritually colourful’. Children are seen as individuals and, in turn, they are cared for as such. Abbotsholme has a behavioural charter and a code of conduct for pupils to follow, and it is ensured that every action or activity takes into account the feelings of others.
Abbotsholme prides itself on providing a stimulating and balanced learning environment in deliberately small classes of around 15 in the Senior School.
The Abbotsholme path to success
The Abbotsholme journey begins in the Pre-Prep school, and is then followed by the Prep school.
With 170 acres of copses, fields, dingles and games pitches, as well as science, art and languages taught by specialist teachers from the Senior School, Abbotsholme’s youngest pupils enjoy unique access to all the facilities used by the senior pupils.
A deliberately wide senior curriculum incorporated traditional academic subjects alongside skills lessons, outdoor education, conservation and farming. Pupils are examined in the core subjects at GCSE level, and most students take nine, while others take eleven.
With a Sixth Form centre to nurture independent learning in a wide range of disciplines at Sixth Form, with both A-Levels and BTECs, as well as a log cabin village for its boarders, Abbotsholme offers students unrivalled freedom and independence for its eldest pupils.
Facilities at Abbotsholme include an indoor climbing centre, British Horse Society (BHS)-approved equestrian centre, working farm, music centre, theatre, art studio and expansive playing fields. There are opportunities to build dens, go camping and kayaking for the Prep School, and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, trips abroad, electric car racing and help with lambing in the Senior School.
Abbotsholme really is a vibrant place to learn and develop. The words of one pupil capture this feeling: ‘Although I have left Abbotsholme, Abbotsholme will never leave me.’
Finally, Abbotsholme’s philosophy is summarised thus: “Balance is the essence of our educational philosophy, where academic, personal and social development are each given equal standing in preparing our young people for a world beyond Abbotsholme.”
