Bootham School

Background
Bootham is co-educational independent school situated in the heart of York, a city whose architectural elegance is famed throughout the country. Bootham is a Quaker establishment which has been instrumental in helping build a sense of collective trust between students and teachers.

Academic
Excellent results in both GCSE and A Level, with a full complement of subjects expected of a modern education establishment. Modern Languages are popular, as well as the three main sciences, but generally every subject is taught with the same care and efficiency one would hope to receive at such a school.

The facilities are striking with art and performance studios, design studio, an IT studio and science facilities.

AS subjects are also studied alongside A Levels with such subjects on offer as Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Classical Civilisation, Drama and Theatre Studies, Economics, General Studies, Geography, German, Psychology, Religious Studies (Philosophy of Religion and Ethics), Spanish, Sports and Physical Education.

Sport
Whilst champions in several sporting disciplines, and having produced Olympic swimmers, county netball and cricket stars, the school’s Quaker ethos is prevalent in ensuring that sport is primarily about character and enjoyment, which closely mirrors their attitude towards the academic side of things.

Art
A high-tech art department has also produced several award winning designers among their students, having being officially recognised and awarded at national level.

Musically over 65% of students play a musical instrument, with very small numbers dropping out of music lessons and study by the time they graduate.

Being a Quaker organisation means the school involves their students in many projects abroad, and also organises expeditions to countries such as Bolivia, Iceland and France.

Boarding
There are three boarding houses, all of which of Georgian architectural design. They have good facilities within, and the sixth formers are allocated flat-style accommodation once they reach sixteen. Wi-Fi access all round, and fully furnished rooms and kitchens.

There are two adult members of staff with every house, whose presence is felt, respected, but never invasive or overbearing.
