Edge Grove School

Set in 28 acres of beautiful Hertfordshire countryside, Edge Grove is a co-educational day and boarding preparatory school for pupils aged 3 to 13. The countryside setting should not mislead prospective students as the School is only 15 miles from central London and a few minutes’ drive from the M1 and M25 motorways. With a long history of boarding, and full, weekly or flexi boarding options available from age 7, the school thrives on its traditional family ethos and superb pastoral support for pupils.

Academic/pastoral care
Pupils are able to achieve a great deal at Edge Grove owing to small class sizes and specialist teaching. Edge Grove follows the Independent Curriculum, a programme of learning from Year 3 through to Year 9 which combines the traditional demands of academic development with creativity, curiosity and independent thinking. Pupils are able to grow in confidence whilst enjoying creative and inspiring teaching.

The vast majority of Edge Grove pupils enter their first choice senior school – including leading UK independent boarding schools, such as Winchester, Oundle, Rugby and King’s Canterbury. It is common for candidates to win scholarships and awards to schools such as Harrow, Eton and North London Collegiate.

Ben Evans, Headmaster, has said the following in relation to Edge Grove’s philosophy: ‘As a school we must preserve tradition but also be forward-thinking and embrace the new – new teaching methods, new technologies and new habits. But without forgetting our values and the most basic and common-sense approach to education – happy children and inspirational teaching will ensure good progress by all.’

With 130 acres of farmland surrounding the School, glorious buildings built in the 18th-century are complemented by classrooms, purpose-built science laboratories, an art room with graphic design facilities, a music technology department, a home economics and textiles room, ICT suites, a dedicated language laboratory as well as an adventure playground.

Based on age, the boarding community resides in comfortable, contemporary and homely dormitories. The Headmaster and his family live in the main building along with the Housemistress, Housemaster, and Gap students, all of whom help maintain the smooth running of the boarding houses and to improve the boarders’ quality of life.

There is no shortage of modern sports facilities, including a heated outdoor swimming pool, a large sports hall, all-weather tennis/netball courts, an AstroTurf pitch, nine acres of playing fields and indoor and outdoor cricket nets.

Extracurricular activities
Encompassing numerous activities such as horse riding, a range of specialist sports and art, music and drama groups, a meticulously designed and varied Activities Programme is held for pupils every weekday and on Saturday mornings.

Boys and girls engage in all the major sports, while the majority of pupils also play a musical instrument. Using the skills of talented pupils from Years 5-8, the school puts on a major musical production each year, while every child from Nursery to Year 5 performs on stage in a year group play.
