Godstowe Prep School
Godstowe Preparatory School has been a pioneer of education since 1900, and is proud of being the first British boarding preparatory school for girls. With more than 400 pupils, Godstowe is a thriving boarding and day school, with an enviable academic reputation. The pre-prep department is co-educational, and welcomes those aged 3 and 7, while the preparatory school is for 7 to 13 year old girls. Girls are prepared for 13+ Common Entrance to independent senior schools and for 11+ entry to grammar schools. In 2012, the ISI inspection team gave Godstowe ‘Excellent’ (the highest available) in all categories and sub-categories in a report which covered boarding and early years as well as the activities of the main school,
Three stunningly refurbished houses nestled within Godstowe’s expansive grounds are the focal point of the girls’ everyday lives as boarders. Each house has a warm and supportive atmosphere -mainly the result of four dedicated, caring and professional staff members. Weekends are crammed full of activity and fun, with many weekly boarders opting to stay for the weekend. Each boarding house has its own garden and tennis court. Supervised homework sessions are offered every evening, while day children may have breakfast and supper with the boarders. Godstowe’s dearly loved enrichment curriculum is essentially an extended school day with up to 50 free after-school activities organised each week. Children are given the opportunity to try many thrilling and challenging new pursuits, including film production, fencing, rock climbing, football and radio-controlled racing.
Godstowe’s entry policy is firmly non-selective, yet the School boasts an incredible academic reputation amongst British independent schools. The entire intake of girls consistently move on to their first-choice senior school and, in 2013, 21 scholarships were won. By the age of 9, pupils are taught by specialists in 16 subjects. French, Spanish and Latin languages are offered. Within world-class facilities, Sport, ICT, art and music are all taught to an exceptionally high level.
“Unparalleled scholarship rate of 52% of Year 8 girls despite non-selective entry policy.”
