Harrogate Ladies’ College
Founded in 1893, Harrogate Ladies’ College is a boarding and day school with 340 pupils aged 11–18. Highfield Prep School and Bankfield Pre-Prep, a co-educational day school for pupils aged 2–11 opened in 1999, is also located within the College’s grounds and is now one of the leading prep schools in North Yorkshire.
The College is situated in the centre of the stunning spa town of Harrogate, which is surrounded by inspiring scenery and National Parks in rural North Yorkshire. Harrogate is a very culturally active city with many events held throughout the year. York and Leeds are also only 20 minutes away. Harrogate has excellent rail and road links, with convenient access to Leeds Bradford Airport (25 minutes), Manchester (1 hour 40 minutes) and London Heathrow (3 hours 40 minutes).
With over 20 nationalities present at the College, almost half of the College’s students are boarders. The boarding houses are arranged vertically from U3 (Year 7) to L6 (Year 12), with each having a housemistress and assistant housemistress who ensure the girls’ wellbeing. Upper Sixth Formers enjoy a greater sense of independence in their own accommodation called ‘Tower House’. Here, girls have individual study bedrooms. Tower House also contains comfortable lounges, a large kitchen and relaxation areas.
Excellent pastoral support, outstanding teaching and a secure, hospitable community all ensure that girls become confident, accomplished young women. Success in GCSE exams continues at the College with an overall rise in A*–C grades, resulting in 74% A*–B grades, with a large proportion of girls gaining majority A* and A awards. At A-level, 45% of all grades were attained at A*/A, with almost a quarter of pupils achieving A* or A in at least three subjects. The majority of pupils are accepted by their first choice universities, including Oxbridge and Russell Group universities.
Facilities and extracurricular
Purpose-built resource areas include a design and technology suite, food technology suite, music house, science block, sports hall and swimming pool. The College also has an award-winning HLC Business School where specialist teachers transmit their accounting, economics, business and accounting knowledge. Girls currently have a choice of over 20 GCSE and 28 A-level subjects. All pupils in the Sixth Form have private studies in school with internet access.
In order to enhance the academic programme, there is a wide range of clubs, societies and cultural activities, leading to the successful transition into tertiary education.
“Harrogate Ladies’ College combines the best aspects of a traditional British education with the skills, qualifications and modern outlook needed by today’s young women.”
