The co-educational Lomond School is found among the tree-lined streets of Helensburgh, some 30 minutes north-west of Glasgow, and 10 minutes from the Trossachs National Park and Loch Ness. Founded in 1845, the School’s history is very distinct, with former alumni including John Logie Baird (inventor of television) and former Prime Minister, Andrew Bonar Law.
Lomond offers boarding and day schooling options to 3 and 18 year olds, and an exceptional quality of life can be found in stunning surroundings in a very non-campus atmosphere. Second to none facilities can be found in new buildings. First class ICT and classroom provision, as well as a new boarding house with en-suite bathroom facilities, are only the beginning of what is on offer. Lomond is genuinely at the forefront of digital learning, having pioneered a scheme to supply each student with their own personal iPad.
Extracurricular activities that add dimension
These days, Lomond School has a creative spring in its step, with a flourishing music department which has earned the School national and international acclaim. The art department is similarly inspiring.
Athletics, hockey, rugby, cricket, canoeing, sailing and outward bound activities are given major attention at Lomond. Both the Duke of Edinburgh and Young Enterprise Award Schemes are also popular at the School. A £3.2m Games Hall project was completed in 2009, enabling a broad range of extra sporting opportunities, such as indoor climbing.
Approach to learning
Excellent teaching, small class sizes and a firmly individual approach form the basis of Lomond’s academic achievements. Exam results are three times higher than the national average, which is outstanding for a non-selective school.
Each student’s attitude to work is monitored regularly, while staff often liaise to discuss each individual’s progress. Each student can reach their full potential because their ambitions and performance levels are constantly tracked, and methods for improvement are implemented where necessary.
Dynamic citizens who face their future with confidence, resilience and determination.
