Moreton Hall School (Oswestry)

Entry requirements
Moreton is a co-educational school for 3–11 year olds. Girls can enter the Senior School at the age of 11, either by Common Entrance or by the School’s entrance examination held at the end of January each year. Sixth-form entrance is by examination and interview, though numbers are limited. Overseas students take up 10% of the intake.

Boarding facilities
Eighty per cent of students board from the age of six. Resident housemistresses, resident tutors and matrons supervise younger girls. As students get older, they have access to single bedrooms. The sixth-form boarding houses offer modern, study rooms, which come with private en-suite bathrooms.

The Curriculum
Around 20 subjects are available at GCSE, ranging from the traditional academic subjects, such as Latin and the sciences, to practical subjects, such as business, drama, dance and physical education.

French, German, Spanish and Mandarin are some of the languages availble. A-levels in history of art, human biology, business studies and theatre studies extend the range of the curriculum.

Information technology is a compulsory subject up to the sixth form, optional thereafter.

Learning Support is free of charge as is English as a Foreign Language.

Academic and leisure pursuits
As one of the UK’s highest-achieving schools at GCSE and A-level, Moreton is a proven provider of academic excellence as shown by its accelerated Oxbridge programme and a unique cultural and academic enrichment programme. There are also purposely dedicated programmes for medical, dentistry and veterinary university applicants. Ninety-eight per cent of students enter the UK’s top universities.
A new centenary science centre and medical science faculty was opened in 2013.

Set in 100 acres of beautiful parkland at the foot of the Berwyn Hills, Moreton offers a range of sporting options including lacrosse, netball, hockey, cricket, tennis and athletics. Sailing and riding are also popular. The School has an exceptionally well-equipped sports centre, with a sports hall, as well as floodlit tennis courts, a heated, indoor swimming pool, an all-weather surface, a nine-hole golf course and expansive playing fields.

The School runs a full programme of extra activities every weekday and at weekends. The students are given many opportunities to visit the theatre and go to concerts, as well as take part in adventure programmes. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme is very popular at Bronze, Silver and Gold Levels.

Moreton Enterprises, a group of companies managed by the Sixth Form, offers the students genuine business experience. This includes seven on-site retail businesses and a bank.
