St Francis’ College
St Francis’ College is a boarding and day school for girls, 3–18, that offers a modern education within traditional values. It is a distinctive school, possessing a remarkable charm. Many visitors say that the school has ‘feels different’. This is because St Francis’ founding traditions continue to reinforce the values that lie at the heart of our community: academic rigour, trust, respect, integrity and responsibility. In the school’s life and work, in the care it gives and receive, there is a notable unity of purpose. Girls call it a ‘St Francis thing’. The school’s founders called it ‘One heart, one soul’.
The College is located in the leafy environs of Letchworth Garden City, the world’s first garden city. Letchworth is just 30 minutes, by train, north of London, making it ideally situated for weekly boarders living in the capital
St Francis’ College boarding has a strong family atmosphere with around 78 full boarders supported by a boarding staff made up entirely of academic tutors. Ensuring high-quality provision for these girls is very important and Ofsted in their recent inspection report agreed that ‘boarders gain in confidence in an environment where they are valued and where caring attitudes are encouraged’.
Excellence in education
Academic results are important and the school’s record speaks for itself. Consistently excellent GCSE and A-level results year after year with the vast majority of girls obtaining places at their chosen universities. Teaching classes remain small, ensuring every girl receives individual attention to fulfil her true potential.Education is not just about academic rigour. Despite being a medium-sized school St Francis’ has county, national and international representatives across a wide range of sports such as badminton, tennis, athletics, riding, hockey, swimming and netball. Girls excel in a range of performing arts dance, drama and music, from choirs and orchestras to jazz and rock bands. The art department has a well-deserved reputation across a wide range of artistic opportunities from painting and drawing, sculpture and photography to mixed media within the fine art framework.
The College has a wide range of on-site sports and extracurricular facilities, including an indoor swimming pool and a 330-seat purpose-built theatre. New science laboratories and IT suites have recently been installed, together with Smart Boards and projectors in classrooms, to ensure girls and staff are provided with the latest technology to support learning.
“.… across all subjects pupils are articulate, work enthusiastically and achieve high standards.”
