Founded in 1858, West Buckland School is an independent day and boarding school located in the South West of England on 90 rural acres of beautiful countryside nearby the stunning North Devon Atlantic coast. The school is only 35 minutes from the M5 motorway and is easily reached from Heathrow Airport as well as other regional travel points.
The School’s GCSE and A-level performance regularly ranks among the best institutions in the South West and beyond. Sixty-five percent of recent graduates secured places at universities in the Russell and 1994 Groups, which are considered to be among the top research universities.
International students receive extensive training through the English as a Second Language (ESL) department, thus easing their transition to learning in a second language.
The main centre of the school includes beautiful 19th century buildings renovated to meet modern demands. These include a top notch sports complex, excellent facilities for design technology, drama and music. A new Study Centre provides pupils aged 11-18 with classrooms, open plan learning spaces, a library and IT resources. The new Sixth Form Co-educational Boarding House boasts 70 en-suite single bedrooms.
The aim of the new renovations and additions is to encourage the formation of a single community among boarders and day students.
A team of houseparents create a caring and supportive environment which is the foundation of the West Buckland boarding community. Boarders are encouraged to get to know pupils from various backgrounds and nationalities, and this is considered an important part of the school’s educational experience.
The educational curriculum is enhanced by a wide range of activities considered to be an integral part of school life. Pupils can enjoy opportunities for outdoor activities, sport, music and the performing arts. There are specialist programmes available for tennis and dance, and pupils can also enjoy surfing, climbing, mountain biking and kayaking, among others.
