Wonderfully situated close to Christchurch Park just north of Ipswich town centre, Ipswich School is split up into four parts on three adjacent sites. The main school site is occupied by the Senior School, where Victorian architecture exudes spirit and history from the main buildings. The Senior School is divided into three divisions: the Lower School (Years 7 and 8), the Middle School (Years 9-11) and the Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13).
Pastoral care and boarding
Ipswich School pays a great deal of attention to helping new students settle in, and making sure they are fulfilled and looked after throughout their time at the School. Until the age of 13, pupils have several points of contact; tutors, heads of year and the Head of Lower School.
Boarding facilities are very eye-catching, where pupils are housed in a Victorian mansion, Westwood, set in wooded grounds just a stone’s throw from the main campus. Games and music practice rooms can be found in the boarding houses, while the School’s Astroturf pitch is located within the Westwood gardens.
The Curriculum at Senior School level is wide and diverse. There is tremendous flexibility within the options offered at GCSE, AS and A level. Language enthusiasts will be delighted to find Russian, Chinese, Latin and Spanish available. Other popular subjects at GCSE level are combined science as well as sports science.
English as an Additional Language (EAL) pupils at Ipswich School live at the Westwood Boarding House. International students can receive a minimum of 2 lessons of specialist EAL tuition weekly on top of the normal curriculum.
Sport and music
Sport is central to life at Ipswich School, with teams representing the School in golf, gymnastics, showjumping and cross country as well as the more traditional team sports. The School has its own facilities at Henley Road and three other sports sites which contain new hockey pitches, netball courts and cricket pitches. The boarding house at Westwood has a hockey pitch which turns into tennis courts in the summer months.
Music is thriving at the School, and a brand new music school is due to be constructed by August 2015 to house state-of-the-art teaching and practice rooms as well as a Recording Studio.
